[Diastolic murmurs in atrial septal defect (author's transl)]. 1976

J Mlczoch, and S Djawan, and P Probst, and O Djawan

No correlation was found between the presence of a diastolic murmur in about 50% of patients with artrial septal defect and the calculated shunt volume. A significant correlation was found in respect to the age of the patient, the majority of the murmurs being found in young patients and especially in young patients with tachycardia. Similar murmurs were found in healthy persons and, hence, a functional stenosis of the AV-valve ring could be the reason for this diastolic murmur, which may occur more frequently in patients with atrial septal defect on account of an alteration in the blood stream patterns.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010101 Oxygen Consumption The rate at which oxygen is used by a tissue; microliters of oxygen STPD used per milligram of tissue per hour; the rate at which oxygen enters the blood from alveolar gas, equal in the steady state to the consumption of oxygen by tissue metabolism throughout the body. (Stedman, 25th ed, p346) Consumption, Oxygen,Consumptions, Oxygen,Oxygen Consumptions
D010701 Phonocardiography Graphic registration of the heart sounds picked up as vibrations and transformed by a piezoelectric crystal microphone into a varying electrical output according to the stresses imposed by the sound waves. The electrical output is amplified by a stethograph amplifier and recorded by a device incorporated into the electrocardiograph or by a multichannel recording machine. Phonocardiographies
D002306 Cardiac Volume The volume of the HEART, usually relating to the volume of BLOOD contained within it at various periods of the cardiac cycle. The amount of blood ejected from a ventricle at each beat is STROKE VOLUME. Heart Volume,Cardiac Volumes,Heart Volumes,Volume, Cardiac,Volume, Heart,Volumes, Cardiac,Volumes, Heart
D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
D006326 Heart Auscultation Act of listening for sounds within the heart. Cardiac Auscultation,Auscultation, Cardiac,Auscultation, Heart,Auscultations, Cardiac,Auscultations, Heart,Cardiac Auscultations,Heart Auscultations
D006337 Heart Murmurs Heart sounds caused by vibrations resulting from the flow of blood through the heart. Heart murmurs can be examined by HEART AUSCULTATION, and analyzed by their intensity (6 grades), duration, timing (systolic, diastolic, or continuous), location, transmission, and quality (musical, vibratory, blowing, etc). D006344 Heart Septal Defects, Atrial Developmental abnormalities in any portion of the ATRIAL SEPTUM resulting in abnormal communications between the two upper chambers of the heart. Classification of atrial septal defects is based on location of the communication and types of incomplete fusion of atrial septa with the ENDOCARDIAL CUSHIONS in the fetal heart. They include ostium primum, ostium secundum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus defects.
