Nosocomial parotitis. 1976

A total of 22 cases of acute suppurative parotitis are reviewed. The causative factors were severe primary disease with salivary gland hyposecretion related to age (77 years), dehydration, oral inactivity and drugs (19 patients). The oral hygiene was poor and permitted ascending canalicular invasion of resistant staphylococci. The mortality was 27%. The treatment, including preferably cloxacilline and incision, is discussed. To stress the importance of prophylaxis the name "nosocomial parotitis" is suggested.
