Cytological and chemical changes in cell walls of Rhodotorula gracilis. III. Characteristics and life cycle of the yeast. 1976

A Kocková-Kratochvílová, and Z Holan

The phenotype and genotype of six strains of the genus Rhodotorula Harrison and of one strain of the genus Cryptococcus Phaff et Fell, with anomalous thickening of cell walls were investigated. The present studies showed that the strains investigated represent different stages of the life cycles of the genus Rhodosporidium Banno. The anomalous thickening of the cell walls can be explained by extreme conditions resulting in the formation of surviving forms (teliospores, chlamydospores).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010641 Phenotype The outward appearance of the individual. It is the product of interactions between genes, and between the GENOTYPE and the environment. Phenotypes
D002338 Carotenoids The general name for a group of fat-soluble pigments found in green, yellow, and leafy vegetables, and yellow fruits. They are aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 4 terpene subunits. Carotenes,Carotenoid,Tetraterpene Derivatives,Tetraterpenes,Carotene,Derivatives, Tetraterpene
D002473 Cell Wall The outermost layer of a cell in most PLANTS; BACTERIA; FUNGI; and ALGAE. The cell wall is usually a rigid structure that lies external to the CELL MEMBRANE, and provides a protective barrier against physical or chemical agents. Cell Walls,Wall, Cell,Walls, Cell
D003454 Cryptococcus A mitosporic Tremellales fungal genus whose species usually have a capsule and do not form pseudomycellium. Teleomorphs include Filobasidiella and Fidobasidium. Torula
D003904 Mitosporic Fungi A large and heterogenous group of fungi whose common characteristic is the absence of a sexual state. Many of the pathogenic fungi in humans belong to this group. D012248 Rhodotorula A red yeast-like mitosporic fungal genus generally regarded as nonpathogenic. It is cultured from numerous sources in human patients. Rhodotorulas
D013172 Spores, Fungal Reproductive bodies produced by fungi. Conidia,Fungal Spores,Conidium,Fungal Spore,Spore, Fungal
D013696 Temperature The property of objects that determines the direction of heat flow when they are placed in direct thermal contact. The temperature is the energy of microscopic motions (vibrational and translational) of the particles of atoms. Temperatures
