OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of theo-polyphenols (TP) on oxygen free radicals and hemorrheology in patients with essential hypertension. METHODS Hemorheology as well as oxygen free radical of 38 patients were determined before and after TP treatment. RESULTS TP markedly increased RBC-SOD activity, reduced the level of serum MDA, the whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity and the level of plasma fibrinogen. The efficacy of TP was higher than that of aspirin. CONCLUSIONS The TP had remarkable effects of anti-oxygen free radicals, and could improve hemorheology.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. D008315 Malondialdehyde The dialdehyde of malonic acid. Malonaldehyde,Propanedial,Malonylaldehyde,Malonyldialdehyde,Sodium Malondialdehyde,Malondialdehyde, Sodium
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010636 Phenols Benzene derivatives that include one or more hydroxyl groups attached to the ring structure.
D011108 Polymers Compounds formed by the joining of smaller, usually repeating, units linked by covalent bonds. These compounds often form large macromolecules (e.g., BIOPOLYMERS; PLASTICS). Polymer
D001809 Blood Viscosity The internal resistance of the BLOOD to shear forces. The in vitro measure of whole blood viscosity is of limited clinical utility because it bears little relationship to the actual viscosity within the circulation, but an increase in the viscosity of circulating blood can contribute to morbidity in patients suffering from disorders such as SICKLE CELL ANEMIA and POLYCYTHEMIA. D005260 Female Females
D005340 Fibrinogen Plasma glycoprotein clotted by thrombin, composed of a dimer of three non-identical pairs of polypeptide chains (alpha, beta, gamma) held together by disulfide bonds. Fibrinogen clotting is a sol-gel change involving complex molecular arrangements: whereas fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form polypeptides A and B, the proteolytic action of other enzymes yields different fibrinogen degradation products. D005419 Flavonoids A group of phenyl benzopyrans named for having structures like FLAVONES. 2-Phenyl-Benzopyran,2-Phenyl-Chromene,Bioflavonoid,Bioflavonoids,Flavonoid,2-Phenyl-Benzopyrans,2-Phenyl-Chromenes,2 Phenyl Benzopyran,2 Phenyl Benzopyrans,2 Phenyl Chromene,2 Phenyl Chromenes
