Effect of neonatal thymectomy on follicle numbers in the post-natal mouse ovary. 1976

S Lintern-Moore, and I Norbaek-Sorensen

1. Surgical removal of the thymus gland within 48 hours of birth has no effect upon the numbers of small, medium and large ovarian follicles in Bagg albino strain mice during the first 12 weeks of life. 2. 20% of thymectomised mice more than 12 weeks of age developed ovarian atrophy which included the disappearance of corpora lutea and an overall reduction in all fractions of the follicle population. 3. These results do not support the proposal of Nishizuka and Sakakura that the thymus gland specifically maintains the non-growing, small (primordial) follicle pool in the mouse ovary during post-natal and reproductive life.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009865 Oocytes Female germ cells derived from OOGONIA and termed OOCYTES when they enter MEIOSIS. The primary oocytes begin meiosis but are arrested at the diplotene state until OVULATION at PUBERTY to give rise to haploid secondary oocytes or ova (OVUM). Ovocytes,Oocyte,Ovocyte
D002452 Cell Count The number of CELLS of a specific kind, usually measured per unit volume or area of sample. Cell Density,Cell Number,Cell Counts,Cell Densities,Cell Numbers,Count, Cell,Counts, Cell,Densities, Cell,Density, Cell,Number, Cell,Numbers, Cell
D005260 Female Females
D006080 Ovarian Follicle An OOCYTE-containing structure in the cortex of the OVARY. The oocyte is enclosed by a layer of GRANULOSA CELLS providing a nourishing microenvironment (FOLLICULAR FLUID). The number and size of follicles vary depending on the age and reproductive state of the female. The growing follicles are divided into five stages: primary, secondary, tertiary, Graafian, and atretic. Follicular growth and steroidogenesis depend on the presence of GONADOTROPINS. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D013934 Thymectomy Surgical removal of the thymus gland. (Dorland, 28th ed) Thymectomies
D013950 Thymus Gland A single, unpaired primary lymphoid organ situated in the MEDIASTINUM, extending superiorly into the neck to the lower edge of the THYROID GLAND and inferiorly to the fourth costal cartilage. It is necessary for normal development of immunologic function early in life. By puberty, it begins to involute and much of the tissue is replaced by fat.
