This article deals with the complexities involved in making custody and visitation orders in families in which there is spousal battering. A study of preschool-aged children who witnessed domestic violence is described. The effects of witnessing violence on the emotional and behavioral functioning of these young children is detailed, and clinical material illustrating the relational dilemmas they face is presented.
