Factors influencing the indomethacin-induced intestinal lesions in the rat. 1975

L Mariani

The influence of various experimental conditions such as partial hepatectomy, administration of hepatotoxic drugs such as carbontetrachloride or ethionine, and starvation on the ulcerogenic activity of indomethacin at intestinal level has been studied in the rat. While lesions produced by oral administration of high doses of indomethacin are reduced by starvation, the incidence of ulcers was significantly increased by partial hepatectomy and by hepatotoxic drugs reaching the maximum of severity (intestinal perforation) in partially hepatectomized animals. These findings suggest that ulcerogenic activity of indomethacin is strictly correlated to the drug metabolising capacity of the liver.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007213 Indomethacin A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID) that inhibits CYCLOOXYGENASE, which is necessary for the formation of PROSTAGLANDINS and other AUTACOIDS. It also inhibits the motility of POLYMORPHONUCLEAR LEUKOCYTES. Amuno,Indocid,Indocin,Indomet 140,Indometacin,Indomethacin Hydrochloride,Metindol,Osmosin
D007410 Intestinal Diseases Pathological processes in any segment of the INTESTINE from DUODENUM to RECTUM. Disease, Intestinal,Diseases, Intestinal,Intestinal Disease
D008099 Liver A large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates that is responsible for detoxification, metabolism, synthesis and storage of various substances. Livers
D008297 Male Males
D002251 Carbon Tetrachloride A solvent for oils, fats, lacquers, varnishes, rubber waxes, and resins, and a starting material in the manufacturing of organic compounds. Poisoning by inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption is possible and may be fatal. (Merck Index, 11th ed) Tetrachloromethane,Tetrachloride, Carbon
D004347 Drug Interactions The action of a drug that may affect the activity, metabolism, or toxicity of another drug. Drug Interaction,Interaction, Drug,Interactions, Drug
D005001 Ethionine 2-Amino-4-(ethylthio)butyric acid. An antimetabolite and methionine antagonist that interferes with amino acid incorporation into proteins and with cellular ATP utilization. It also produces liver neoplasms.
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D013217 Starvation Lengthy and continuous deprivation of food. (Stedman, 25th ed)
D014456 Ulcer A lesion on the surface of the skin or a mucous surface, produced by the sloughing of inflammatory necrotic tissue. Ulcers
