The synthesis of some new 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-5-aryl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles (4a-k) has been described. Ethyl-6-methoxy-2-naphthoate (1) yielded on treatment with hydrazine hydrate to 6-methoxy-2-naphthoic acid hydrazide (2). Compound 2 reacted with substituted aromatic carboxylic acids (3a-k) in phosphorus oxychloride yielded 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-5-aryl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles (4a-k). Newly synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, (1)H-NMR and mass spectral data. All the compounds were screened for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. Compound 4j exhibited promising anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities.

D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D000894 Anti-Inflammatory Agents, Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory agents that are non-steroidal in nature. In addition to anti-inflammatory actions, they have analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. They act by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to cyclic endoperoxides, precursors of prostaglandins. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis accounts for their analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions; other mechanisms may contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects.
