OBJECTIVE To study the chemical constituents of paeoniflorins from root cortex of the Paeonia suffruticosa. METHODS Paeoniflorins were isolated by partition, silica gel column chromatography, medium-pressure RP chromatography and HPLC. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including IR, MS and NMR techniques. RESULTS Nine paeoniflorins were isolated and identified from the root bark ethanol extract of P. suffruticosa. CONCLUSIONS The new compound was identified as paeoniflorin-4-ethyl ether, which may be an artifact produced during extraction proved by simulate experiment.
