OBJECTIVE In an attempt to understand the events in the secondary neurulation in embryonic stage, we investigated cytokinetic changes in the tail bud of normal developing chick embryos. METHODS We investigated chick embryos of Hamburger and Hamilton stages 16-45 by staining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and applying the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method. CONCLUSIONS The cytokinetics of secondary neurulation have several distinctive properties: a general chronological delay compared to primary neurulation; absence of ventrodorsal differences; larger rostrocaudal differences; and degeneration of the distal end of the spinal cord in the later stages of development. These differences in morphogenetic and cytokinetic behavior between primary and secondary neurulation may help to improve our understanding of anomalies originating during secondary neurulation.

D002642 Chick Embryo The developmental entity of a fertilized chicken egg (ZYGOTE). The developmental process begins about 24 h before the egg is laid at the BLASTODISC, a small whitish spot on the surface of the EGG YOLK. After 21 days of incubation, the embryo is fully developed before hatching. Embryo, Chick,Chick Embryos,Embryos, Chick
D000367 Age Factors Age as a constituent element or influence contributing to the production of a result. It may be applicable to the cause or the effect of a circumstance. It is used with human or animal concepts but should be differentiated from AGING, a physiological process, and TIME FACTORS which refers only to the passage of time. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D017209 Apoptosis A regulated cell death mechanism characterized by distinctive morphologic changes in the nucleus and cytoplasm, including the endonucleolytic cleavage of genomic DNA, at regularly spaced, internucleosomal sites, i.e., DNA FRAGMENTATION. It is genetically programmed and serves as a balance to mitosis in regulating the size of animal tissues and in mediating pathologic processes associated with tumor growth.
