OBJECTIVE Subsequent to total gastrectomy, many patients develop maldigestion and weight loss. The mechanisms that underlie these changes are not known. Therefore, the present study investigates the influence of total gastrectomy on pancreatic function in rats. METHODS Animals were divided into two groups. Group 1, sham operations (S) (n=8), Group2, total gastrectomy (n=10) with an end-to-end anastomosis between the esophagus and duodenum. After four weeks, the entire pancreas was excised. Measurement of amylase, lipase, weight,DNA and total protein were carried out in the homogenized pancreatic tissue. RESULTS The pancreatic response to total gastrectomy in our experimental data was reflected the retardation of pancreatic growth with a decrease in pancreatic wet weight, DNA, protein, pancreatic amylase and pancreatic lipase. CONCLUSIONS After total gastrectomy, rats developed sever primary exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. These experimental data indicate that stomach has an influence on the regulation of the exocrine pancreas and that changes in the integrity of the stomach can induce functional alterations in the exocrine pancreas.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008049 Lipase An enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the reaction of triacylglycerol and water to yield diacylglycerol and a fatty acid anion. It is produced by glands on the tongue and by the pancreas and initiates the digestion of dietary fats. (From Dorland, 27th ed) EC 3.1.1.3. D009929 Organ Size The measurement of an organ in volume, mass, or heaviness. Organ Volume,Organ Weight,Size, Organ,Weight, Organ
D004247 DNA A deoxyribonucleotide polymer that is the primary genetic material of all cells. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms normally contain DNA in a double-stranded state, yet several important biological processes transiently involve single-stranded regions. DNA, which consists of a polysugar-phosphate backbone possessing projections of purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (thymine and cytosine), forms a double helix that is held together by hydrogen bonds between these purines and pyrimidines (adenine to thymine and guanine to cytosine). D005743 Gastrectomy Excision of the whole (total gastrectomy) or part (subtotal gastrectomy, partial gastrectomy, gastric resection) of the stomach. (Dorland, 28th ed) Gastrectomies
D005755 Gastrins A family of gastrointestinal peptide hormones that excite the secretion of GASTRIC JUICE. They may also occur in the central nervous system where they are presumed to be neurotransmitters. Gastrin
D000681 Amylases A group of amylolytic enzymes that cleave starch, glycogen, and related alpha-1,4-glucans. (Stedman, 25th ed) EC 3.2.1.-. Diastase,Amylase
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D017208 Rats, Wistar A strain of albino rat developed at the Wistar Institute that has spread widely at other institutions. This has markedly diluted the original strain. Wistar Rat,Rat, Wistar,Wistar Rats
D046790 Pancreas, Exocrine The major component (about 80%) of the PANCREAS composed of acinar functional units of tubular and spherical cells. The acinar cells synthesize and secrete several digestive enzymes such as TRYPSINOGEN; LIPASE; AMYLASE; and RIBONUCLEASE. Secretion from the exocrine pancreas drains into the pancreatic ductal system and empties into the DUODENUM. Exocrine Pancreas
