The transduction of environmental lighting cues into biochemical rhythms via mammalian pineal gland. 1981

Evolution has occurred in an environment of fluctuating photoperiod. These changes are transduced by the mammalian pineal gland into cyclic biochemical patterns. Theories of this mechanism and the subsequent function of the pineal are discussed.
