BACKGROUND The epidemiology of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) in cystic fibrosis (CF) is not widely known. METHODS All CF patients with Bcc between 2002 and 2011 were reviewed, and a molecular analysis of isolates was performed. RESULTS The prevalence of Bcc infection was 7.2% (18/250). Molecular analysis of 16 Bcc isolates showed 5 species (7 B. contaminans, 6 B. cepacia, 1 B. cenocepacia, 1 B. multivorans, and 1 B. stabilis) and 13 sequence types. There were no cases of cross-transmission. CONCLUSIONS A high diversity of Bcc species was found in infected CF patients.

D003550 Cystic Fibrosis An autosomal recessive genetic disease of the EXOCRINE GLANDS. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRANSMEMBRANE CONDUCTANCE REGULATOR expressed in several organs including the LUNG, the PANCREAS, the BILIARY SYSTEM, and the SWEAT GLANDS. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by epithelial secretory dysfunction associated with ductal obstruction resulting in AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION; chronic RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS; PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY; maldigestion; salt depletion; and HEAT PROSTRATION. D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D042602 Burkholderia cepacia complex A group of phenotypically similar but genotypically distinct species (genomovars) in the genus BURKHOLDERIA. They are found in water, soil, and the rhizosphere of crop plants. They can act as opportunistic human pathogens and as plant growth promoting and biocontrol agents.
D055815 Young Adult A person between 19 and 24 years of age. Adult, Young,Adults, Young,Young Adults
