Sequence variability of satellite DNA from the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. 1989

To determine the consensus sequence of a 142-bp-long satellite monomer from the mealworm Tenebrio molitor, 22 clones were sequenced. Only nucleotide (nt) substitutions were found. The average sequence variability is 2.5 nt per monomer; changes are predominantly C----T and G----A transitions and the sequence tends to become A + T-rich. T. molitor satellite DNA is undermethylated and transcriptionally inactive.

They are composed of simple sequences (very short) (see MINISATELLITE REPEATS) repeated in tandem many times to form large blocks of sequence. Additionally, following the accumulation of mutations, these blocks of repeats have been repeated in tandem themselves. The degree of repetition is on the order of 1000 to 10 million at each locus.
