Plasma beta-endorphin and beta-lipotropin in patients with end-stage renal disease--effects of hemodialysis. 1986

A N Elias, and N D Vaziri, and M Maksy

The effect of hemodialysis on the plasma concentration of beta-endorphin (beta-EP) and beta-lipotropin (beta-LPH) was studied in 11 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The plasma beta-EP/beta-LPH concentrations measured at 13.00 h were not significantly different in the patients compared to age-matched controls. Furthermore, hemodialysis produced no change in the plasma concentrations of beta-EP/beta-LPH. The elevated levels of beta-EP/LPH previously reported are most likely a reflection of the measurement of these peptides at a time of peak diurnal secretion compounded by a fall in the metabolic clearance rate of the endogenous opioids in ESRD. It remains to be established whether measurement of adronocorticotropic hormone or beta-EP/beta-LPH is more accurate an indicator of the integrity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in patients with ESRD.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007030 Hypothalamo-Hypophyseal System A collection of NEURONS, tracts of NERVE FIBERS, endocrine tissue, and blood vessels in the HYPOTHALAMUS and the PITUITARY GLAND. This hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal circulation provides the mechanism for hypothalamic neuroendocrine (HYPOTHALAMIC HORMONES) regulation of pituitary function and the release of various PITUITARY HORMONES into the systemic circulation to maintain HOMEOSTASIS. D007676 Kidney Failure, Chronic The end-stage of CHRONIC RENAL INSUFFICIENCY. It is characterized by the severe irreversible kidney damage (as measured by the level of PROTEINURIA) and the reduction in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE to less than 15 ml per min (Kidney Foundation: Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative, 2002). These patients generally require HEMODIALYSIS or KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION. D008083 beta-Lipotropin A 90-amino acid peptide derived from post-translational processing of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) in the PITUITARY GLAND and the HYPOTHALAMUS. It is the C-terminal fragment of POMC with lipid-mobilizing activities, such as LIPOLYSIS and steroidogenesis. Depending on the species and the tissue sites, beta-LPH may be further processed to yield active peptides including GAMMA-LIPOTROPIN; BETA-MSH; and ENDORPHINS. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010913 Pituitary-Adrenal System The interactions between the anterior pituitary and adrenal glands, in which corticotropin (ACTH) stimulates the adrenal cortex and adrenal cortical hormones suppress the production of corticotropin by the anterior pituitary. D004723 Endorphins One of the three major groups of endogenous opioid peptides. They are large peptides derived from the PRO-OPIOMELANOCORTIN precursor. The known members of this group are alpha-, beta-, and gamma-endorphin. The term endorphin is also sometimes used to refer to all opioid peptides, but the narrower sense is used here; OPIOID PEPTIDES is used for the broader group. Endorphin
