Hand Pain and Sensory Deficits: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. 2019

Mia Erickson, and Marsha Lawrence, and Caroline W Stegink Jansen, and Diane Coker, and Peter Amadio, and Carla Cleary

The Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy and the Academy of Hand and Upper Extremity Physical Therapy have an ongoing effort to create evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for orthopaedic and sports physical therapy management and prevention of musculoskeletal impairments described in the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). This particular guideline focuses on hand pain and sensory deficits in carpal tunnel syndrome. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2019;49(5):CPG1-CPG85. doi:10.2519/jospt.2019.0301.

D002349 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Entrapment of the MEDIAN NERVE in the carpal tunnel, which is formed by the flexor retinaculum and the CARPAL BONES. This syndrome may be associated with repetitive occupational trauma (CUMULATIVE TRAUMA DISORDERS); wrist injuries; AMYLOID NEUROPATHIES; rheumatoid arthritis (see ARTHRITIS, RHEUMATOID); ACROMEGALY; PREGNANCY; and other conditions. Symptoms include burning pain and paresthesias involving the ventral surface of the hand and fingers which may radiate proximally. Impairment of sensation in the distribution of the median nerve and thenar muscle atrophy may occur. D020886 Somatosensory Disorders Disorders of sensory information received from superficial and deep regions of the body. The somatosensory system conveys neural impulses which pertain to proprioception, tactile sensation, thermal sensation, pressure sensation, and pain.
