[Seroepidemiological investigations on the incidence of Brucella canis antibodies in man (author's transl)]. 1977

A Weber, and H Brunner

1915 serum samples of humans were examined in the serum tube agglutination test for antibodies to Brucella canis. 1400 random samples were from blood-donors, 480 samples from clinical patients and 35 samples from persons, exposed to dogs and material infected with Br. canis. Agglutinating antibodies to Br. canis antigen were detected in 6 sera (titers 1 X 1:400, 2 X 1:200, 3 X 1:100). In 3 cases positive results were confirmed by complement fixation and indirect immunofluorescence tests. All serum samples with agglutinating antibodies were from healthy blood-donors. Serum samples from patients, and from 7 veterinary surgeons, 9 laboratory assistants and 19 animal care-takers had no agglutinating antibodies to Br. canis in a serum dilution of 1:50.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D002002 Brucella A genus of gram-negative, aerobic bacteria that causes BRUCELLOSIS. Its cells are nonmotile coccobacilli and are animal parasites and pathogens. The bacterium is transmissible to humans through contact with infected dairy products or tissue.
D003168 Complement Fixation Tests Serologic tests based on inactivation of complement by the antigen-antibody complex (stage 1). Binding of free complement can be visualized by addition of a second antigen-antibody system such as red cells and appropriate red cell antibody (hemolysin) requiring complement for its completion (stage 2). Failure of the red cells to lyse indicates that a specific antigen-antibody reaction has taken place in stage 1. If red cells lyse, free complement is present indicating no antigen-antibody reaction occurred in stage 1. D005455 Fluorescent Antibody Technique Test for tissue antigen using either a direct method, by conjugation of antibody with fluorescent dye (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, DIRECT) or an indirect method, by formation of antigen-antibody complex which is then labeled with fluorescein-conjugated anti-immunoglobulin antibody (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, INDIRECT). The tissue is then examined by fluorescence microscopy.
