This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum vitamin D levels and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This prospective study consisted of 137 participants. There were 69 participants in the BPPV group compared with 68 healthy participants. Blood samples from both groups were collected from all participants to assess serum vitamin D levels. No significant difference in demographic data between BPPV and control groups. The results showed that the mean serum vitamin D levels in the BPPV group was lower than that of the control group (P value = .001). Among BPPV participants, there was no statistically significant difference between mean serum vitamin D levels of participants with recurrent BPPV, and that of newly diagnosed BPPV participants (P value = .313). A statistically significant association between lower mean serum vitamin D levels in the BPPV group compared with that of the control group. Therefore, low serum vitamin D levels may be one of the risk factors for BPPV.

D014807 Vitamin D A vitamin that includes both CHOLECALCIFEROLS and ERGOCALCIFEROLS, which have the common effect of preventing or curing RICKETS in animals. It can also be viewed as a hormone since it can be formed in SKIN by action of ULTRAVIOLET RAYS upon the precursors, 7-dehydrocholesterol and ERGOSTEROL, and acts on VITAMIN D RECEPTORS to regulate CALCIUM in opposition to PARATHYROID HORMONE.
D014808 Vitamin D Deficiency A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of VITAMIN D in the diet, insufficient production of vitamin D in the skin, inadequate absorption of vitamin D from the diet, or abnormal conversion of vitamin D to its bioactive metabolites. It is manifested clinically as RICKETS in children and OSTEOMALACIA in adults. (From Cecil Textbook of Medicine, 19th ed, p1406) Deficiency, Vitamin D,Deficiencies, Vitamin D,Vitamin D Deficiencies
D065635 Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Idiopathic recurrent VERTIGO associated with POSITIONAL NYSTAGMUS. It is associated with a vestibular loss without other neurological or auditory signs. Unlike in LABYRINTHITIS and VESTIBULAR NEURONITIS, inflammation in the ear is not observed.
