N-acetyl-beta-D-glycosaminidase (NAG) isoenzymes were studied in 28 insulin-dependent diabetics. After electrophoretic migration isoenzyme. A levels were higher than in healthy controls. This suggests that the increase in total serum NAG in diabetics is due to a specific increase in this enzyme. A comparison of these results with those of other authors suggests that NAG alterations are specific to various pathologies.

D003922 Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1 A subtype of DIABETES MELLITUS that is characterized by INSULIN deficiency. It is manifested by the sudden onset of severe HYPERGLYCEMIA, rapid progression to DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS, and DEATH unless treated with insulin. The disease may occur at any age, but is most common in childhood or adolescence. D000118 Acetylglucosaminidase A beta-N-Acetylhexosaminidase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of terminal, non-reducing 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-glucose residues in chitobiose and higher analogs as well as in glycoproteins. Has been used widely in structural studies on bacterial cell walls and in the study of diseases such as MUCOLIPIDOSIS and various inflammatory disorders of muscle and connective tissue.
