[Comparative evaluation of the cytogenetic action of anthracycline-group antitumor antibiotics (daunomycin, doxorubicin and carminomycin)]. 1986

V V Novitskiĭ, and M Iu Klimova, and E D Gol'dberg

The cytogenetic effect of antitumor antibiotics of the anthracycline group was studied with the use of the routine analysis of chromosomes in the metaphase plates of the bone marrow cells and the micronuclear test (the procedure of counting erythrocytes with micronuclei in peripheral blood). It was shown that by the level of the mutagenic effect the antibiotics might be arranged as follows with respect to the decrease in their activity: carminomycin----doxorubicin----daunomycin. The micronuclear test provided estimation of the cytogenetic damage of the bone marrow. In this connection the procedure may be recommended for rapid evaluation of the mutagenic effect of various anthracyclines and probably other cytostatics characterized by mutagenic activity.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008677 Metaphase The phase of cell nucleus division following PROMETAPHASE, in which the CHROMOSOMES line up across the equatorial plane of the SPINDLE APPARATUS prior to separation.
D009154 Mutation Any detectable and heritable change in the genetic material that causes a change in the GENOTYPE and which is transmitted to daughter cells and to succeeding generations. Mutations
D001853 Bone Marrow The soft tissue filling the cavities of bones. Bone marrow exists in two types, yellow and red. Yellow marrow is found in the large cavities of large bones and consists mostly of fat cells and a few primitive blood cells. Red marrow is a hematopoietic tissue and is the site of production of erythrocytes and granular leukocytes. Bone marrow is made up of a framework of connective tissue containing branching fibers with the frame being filled with marrow cells. D002360 Carubicin A very toxic anthracycline-type antineoplastic related to DAUNORUBICIN, obtained from Actinomadura carminata. D002467 Cell Nucleus Within a eukaryotic cell, a membrane-limited body which contains chromosomes and one or more nucleoli (CELL NUCLEOLUS). The nuclear membrane consists of a double unit-type membrane which is perforated by a number of pores; the outermost membrane is continuous with the ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM. A cell may contain more than one nucleus. (From Singleton & Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2d ed) Cell Nuclei,Nuclei, Cell,Nucleus, Cell
D002869 Chromosome Aberrations Abnormal number or structure of chromosomes. Chromosome aberrations may result in CHROMOSOME DISORDERS. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
