Embedding method for electron microscopy in biology. 1985

H Kushida

Transmission electron microscopes were commercially available in some foreign countries in the later 1930s. Sectioning for light microscopy was used for electron microscopic observations of the internal structure of cells and tissues in the early days. Paraffin waxes were tested as embedding media, but they were too soft to enable thin sections. Pease and Baker (1948) (74) achieved an early success with the double-embedding method using the plastic "Parlodion" and paraffin wax.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008689 Methacrylates Acrylic acids or acrylates which are substituted in the C-2 position with a methyl group. Methacrylate
D008854 Microscopy, Electron Microscopy using an electron beam, instead of light, to visualize the sample, thereby allowing much greater magnification. The interactions of ELECTRONS with specimens are used to provide information about the fine structure of that specimen. In TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY the reactions of the electrons that are transmitted through the specimen are imaged. In SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY an electron beam falls at a non-normal angle on the specimen and the image is derived from the reactions occurring above the plane of the specimen. Electron Microscopy
D011091 Polyesters Polymers of organic acids and alcohols, with ester linkages--usually polyethylene terephthalate; can be cured into hard plastic, films or tapes, or fibers which can be woven into fabrics, meshes or velours. Polyester
D004853 Epoxy Resins Polymeric resins derived from OXIRANES and characterized by strength and thermosetting properties. Epoxy resins are often used as dental materials. Epoxy Resin,Resin, Epoxy,Resins, Epoxy
D006652 Histological Techniques Methods of preparing tissue for examination and study of the origin, structure, function, or pathology. Histologic Technic,Histologic Technics,Histologic Technique,Histologic Techniques,Histological Technics,Technic, Histologic,Technics, Histologic,Technique, Histologic,Techniques, Histologic,Histological Technic,Histological Technique,Technic, Histological,Technics, Histological,Technique, Histological,Techniques, Histological
D013343 Styrenes Derivatives and polymers of styrene. They are used in the manufacturing of synthetic rubber, plastics, and resins. Some of the polymers form the skeletal structures for ion exchange resin beads.
D020058 Styrene A colorless, toxic liquid with a strong aromatic odor. It is used to make rubbers, polymers and copolymers, and polystyrene plastics. Styrene Monomer,Styrol,Vinylbenzene,Monomer, Styrene
