Familial biochemical and clinical correlates of alcoholics with low platelet monoamine oxidase activity. 1979

This study substantiates previous reports that low platelet MAO activity is associated with alcoholism. The results also indicate that low platelet MAO activity in alcoholic probands is associated with a higher prevalence of psychiatric hospitalization in first-degree family members as well as alcoholism and suicide attempts among alcoholics. Psychiatrically ill family members of the alcoholic probands with low platelet MAO activity also demonstrate low enzyme activity whereas the well family members have normal enzyme activity.

D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D008995 Monoamine Oxidase An enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of naturally occurring monoamines. It is a flavin-containing enzyme that is localized in mitochondrial membranes, whether in nerve terminals, the liver, or other organs. Monoamine oxidase is important in regulating the metabolic degradation of catecholamines and serotonin in neural or target tissues. Hepatic monoamine oxidase has a crucial defensive role in inactivating circulating monoamines or those, such as tyramine, that originate in the gut and are absorbed into the portal circulation. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D000437 Alcoholism A primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic.
