Experimental study with the Scurasil ureteral prosthesis. 1977

S Fitzig, and J J Handler, and P D Zimskind

The latest generation of Scurasil (dimethylpolisoxane) ureteral prosthesis was used in six dogs as a model for internal urinary diversion in patients with metastatic disease. It was found to cause minimal reaction but carried a high complication rate, including stone formation, end-stage pyelonephritis, and hydronephrosis. Although technically easy to use, modifications in design are necessary prior to use in humans.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D004129 Dimethylpolysiloxanes Silicone polymers which consist of silicon atoms substituted with methyl groups and linked by oxygen atoms. They comprise a series of biocompatible materials used as liquids, gels or solids; as film for artificial membranes, gels for implants, and liquids for drug vehicles; and as antifoaming agents. Dimethylsiloxanes,Polydimethylsiloxanes,Dimethylpolysiloxane,Dimethylsiloxane
D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog
D005260 Female Females
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D012828 Silicones A broad family of synthetic organosiloxane polymers containing a repeating silicon-oxygen backbone with organic side groups attached via carbon-silicon bonds. Depending on their structure, they are classified as liquids, gels, and elastomers. (From Merck Index, 12th ed) Silicone
D014513 Ureter One of a pair of thick-walled tubes that transports urine from the KIDNEY PELVIS to the URINARY BLADDER. Ureters
D014547 Urinary Diversion Temporary or permanent diversion of the flow of urine through the ureter away from the URINARY BLADDER in the presence of a bladder disease or after cystectomy. There is a variety of techniques: direct anastomosis of ureter and bowel, cutaneous ureterostomy, ileal, jejunal or colon conduit, ureterosigmoidostomy, etc. (From Campbell's Urology, 6th ed, p2654) Ileal Conduit,Conduit, Ileal,Conduits, Ileal,Diversion, Urinary,Diversions, Urinary,Ileal Conduits,Urinary Diversions
D019736 Prostheses and Implants Artificial substitutes for body parts, and materials inserted into tissue for functional, cosmetic, or therapeutic purposes. Prostheses can be functional, as in the case of artificial arms and legs, or cosmetic, as in the case of an artificial eye. Implants, all surgically inserted or grafted into the body, tend to be used therapeutically. IMPLANTS, EXPERIMENTAL is available for those used experimentally.
