Neurons containing luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone in the indusium griseum of the rat. 1982

I Merchenthaler, and T Görcs, and G Sétáló

The authors detected LH--RH-containing neurons in the dorsal part of the hippocampus and in the indusium griseum of the rat. LH--RH-containing nerve fibres interconnect the organum subfornicale (OSF) and the dorsal hippocampus. Axons leaving the OSF can be traced backwards, then around the splenium of the corpus callosum, from where they run forwards in the stria longitudinalis medialis (SLM). LH--RH fibres of the SLM give axon collaterals to the cingulate cortex, then intermingle with the LH--RH system of the septum pellucidum. Following coronal transection of the SLM, it could be determined that LH--RH fibres form bidirectional connection between the septum and different regions of the hippocampus.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007987 Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone A decapeptide that stimulates the synthesis and secretion of both pituitary gonadotropins, LUTEINIZING HORMONE and FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE. GnRH is produced by neurons in the septum PREOPTIC AREA of the HYPOTHALAMUS and released into the pituitary portal blood, leading to stimulation of GONADOTROPHS in the ANTERIOR PITUITARY GLAND. D009474 Neurons The basic cellular units of nervous tissue. Each neuron consists of a body, an axon, and dendrites. Their purpose is to receive, conduct, and transmit impulses in the NERVOUS SYSTEM. Nerve Cells,Cell, Nerve,Cells, Nerve,Nerve Cell,Neuron
D011919 Rats, Inbred Strains Genetically identical individuals developed from brother and sister matings which have been carried out for twenty or more generations or by parent x offspring matings carried out with certain restrictions. This also includes animals with a long history of closed colony breeding. D003337 Corpus Callosum Broad plate of dense myelinated fibers that reciprocally interconnect regions of the cortex in all lobes with corresponding regions of the opposite hemisphere. The corpus callosum is located deep in the longitudinal fissure. D006624 Hippocampus A curved elevation of GRAY MATTER extending the entire length of the floor of the TEMPORAL HORN of the LATERAL VENTRICLE (see also TEMPORAL LOBE). The hippocampus proper, subiculum, and DENTATE GYRUS constitute the hippocampal formation. Sometimes authors include the ENTORHINAL CORTEX in the hippocampal formation. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
