Bile acids. OV. 2,2-Dimethoxypropane: an esterifying agent preferred to diazomethane for chenodeoxycholic acid. 1978

R Shaw, and W H Elliott

Artifacts formed by methylation of chenodeoxycholic acid with diazomethane are identical to the synthetic 3alpha- and 7 alpha-monomethyl ethers of methyl chenodeoxycholate. The extent of formation of these artifacts with time has been studied. No detectable artifacts were found with 2,2-dimethoxypropane as the methylating agent.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008745 Methylation Addition of methyl groups. In histo-chemistry methylation is used to esterify carboxyl groups and remove sulfate groups by treating tissue sections with hot methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. (From Stedman, 25th ed) Methylations
D011407 Propane A three carbon alkane with the formula H3CCH2CH3.
D002621 Chemistry A basic science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter; and the reactions that occur between substances and the associated energy exchange.
D002635 Chenodeoxycholic Acid A bile acid, usually conjugated with either glycine or taurine. It acts as a detergent to solubilize fats for intestinal absorption and is reabsorbed by the small intestine. It is used as cholagogue, a choleretic laxative, and to prevent or dissolve gallstones. D002845 Chromatography Techniques used to separate mixtures of substances based on differences in the relative affinities of the substances for mobile and stationary phases. A mobile phase (fluid or gas) passes through a column containing a stationary phase of porous solid or liquid coated on a solid support. Usage is both analytical for small amounts and preparative for bulk amounts. Chromatographies
