Epidemiological research strategies for multiple factor studies. 1982

F H Epstein

Epidemiological approaches to the study of chronic diseases with multiple aetiology are reviewed. Sources of hypotheses, the place of epidemiology within the total framework of medical research, types of epidemiological studies, problems of methodology and the complexity of the simultaneous measurement of a multiplicity of factors and influences are discussed, with special reference to the psychosocial aspects of cardiovascular disease. Future strategies include prospective epidemiological investigation but also the parallel development of new predictive tests which link psychological stresses to disease mechanisms, providing a base for preventive action.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D012107 Research Design A plan for collecting and utilizing data so that desired information can be obtained with sufficient precision or so that an hypothesis can be tested properly. D002908 Chronic Disease Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed). For epidemiological studies chronic disease often includes HEART DISEASES; STROKE; CANCER; and diabetes (DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 2). D005163 Factor Analysis, Statistical A set of statistical methods for analyzing the correlations among several variables in order to estimate the number of fundamental dimensions that underlie the observed data and to describe and measure those dimensions. It is used frequently in the development of scoring systems for rating scales and questionnaires.
