The glutamate transporter takes up glutamate to terminate neurotransmission and to prevent neuronal cell death. Chromosomal location of the human glutamate transporter, hGluT-1, gene (SLC1A3) was determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization. SLC1A3 was mapped to chromosome 5p13.

D017404 In Situ Hybridization, Fluorescence A type of IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION in which target sequences are stained with fluorescent dye so their location and size can be determined using fluorescence microscopy. This staining is sufficiently distinct that the hybridization signal can be seen both in metaphase spreads and in interphase nuclei. D018528 ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters A family of MEMBRANE TRANSPORT PROTEINS that require ATP hydrolysis for the transport of substrates across membranes. The protein family derives its name from the ATP-binding domain found on the protein.
