A high level of humoral antibody to the capsid antigen of Epstein-Barr virus was found in sera from patients with infectious mononucleosis. For detection of antibody, the method of indirect immunofluorescence in fixed P3HEHR cells of Burkitt's lymphoma was used. Sera from normal subjects were also shown to contain antibody to the capsid antigen of Epstein-Barr virus, but the titers were 5--10 times lower than in the sera from infectious mononucleosis patients. The occurrance of high titers of antibody to EBV in the sera from patients with infectious mononucleosis is diagnostic for IM and may be used for practical purposes.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007244 Infectious Mononucleosis A common, acute infection usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (HERPESVIRUS 4, HUMAN). There is an increase in mononuclear white blood cells and other atypical lymphocytes, generalized lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and occasionally hepatomegaly with hepatitis. D005455 Fluorescent Antibody Technique Test for tissue antigen using either a direct method, by conjugation of antibody with fluorescent dye (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, DIRECT) or an indirect method, by formation of antigen-antibody complex which is then labeled with fluorescein-conjugated anti-immunoglobulin antibody (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, INDIRECT). The tissue is then examined by fluorescence microscopy.
