OBJECTIVE To determine the efficacy of sonographic assessment of amniotic fluid volume (AFV) in predicting intrapartum fetal distress in pregnancies with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) compared with the nonstress test (NST). METHODS A prospective study of 242 pregnancies with IUGR who underwent antepartum assessment of AFV and NST with intrapartum continuous FHR monitoring was conducted and analyzed. RESULTS AFV was a reliable predictor of intrapartum fetal distress with sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of 84.0%, 83.41%, 36.84% and 97.84%, respectively. The efficacy of AFV was comparable with that of the NST. CONCLUSIONS Sonographic assessment of AFV is an effective predictor of intrapartum fetal distress in pregnancies with IUGR.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011237 Predictive Value of Tests In screening and diagnostic tests, the probability that a person with a positive test is a true positive (i.e., has the disease), is referred to as the predictive value of a positive test; whereas, the predictive value of a negative test is the probability that the person with a negative test does not have the disease. Predictive value is related to the sensitivity and specificity of the test. Negative Predictive Value,Positive Predictive Value,Predictive Value Of Test,Predictive Values Of Tests,Negative Predictive Values,Positive Predictive Values,Predictive Value, Negative,Predictive Value, Positive
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D005260 Female Females
D005316 Fetal Distress A nonreassuring fetal status (NRFS) indicating that the FETUS is compromised (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists 1988). It can be identified by sub-optimal values in FETAL HEART RATE; oxygenation of FETAL BLOOD; and other parameters. Nonreassuring Fetal Status,Fetal Status, Nonreassuring
D005317 Fetal Growth Retardation Failure of a FETUS to attain expected GROWTH. Growth Retardation, Intrauterine,Intrauterine Growth Retardation,Fetal Growth Restriction,Intrauterine Growth Restriction
D005323 Fetal Monitoring Physiologic or biochemical monitoring of the fetus. It is usually done during LABOR, OBSTETRIC and may be performed in conjunction with the monitoring of uterine activity. It may also be performed prenatally as when the mother is undergoing surgery. Monitoring, Fetal,Fetal Monitorings,Monitorings, Fetal
D006340 Heart Rate, Fetal The heart rate of the FETUS. The normal range at term is between 120 and 160 beats per minute. Fetal Heart Rate,Fetal Heart Rates,Heart Rates, Fetal,Rate, Fetal Heart,Rates, Fetal Heart
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D012680 Sensitivity and Specificity Binary classification measures to assess test results. Sensitivity or recall rate is the proportion of true positives. Specificity is the probability of correctly determining the absence of a condition. (From Last, Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed) Specificity,Sensitivity,Specificity and Sensitivity
