Plasma renin activity in oedematous and marasmic children with protein energy malnutrition. 1975

J M van der Westhuysen, and E Kanengoni, and J J Jones, and C H van Niekerk

Plasma renin activity was measured by bio-assay in 52 children with kwashiorkor, in 28 with marasmus and in 21 healthy children. Plasma renin activity was significantly increased in children with kwashiorkor and marasmus, compared with healthy children, and in children who died, compared with survivors. No strict causal relationship could be found between plasma renin activity and the degree of oedema in kwashiorkor. Increased renin activity probably results from a terminal change in cardiovascular function.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007223 Infant A child between 1 and 23 months of age. Infants
D007732 Kwashiorkor A syndrome produced by severe protein deficiency, characterized by retarded growth, changes in skin and hair pigment, edema, and pathologic changes in the liver, including fatty infiltration, necrosis, and fibrosis. The word is a local name in Gold Coast, Africa, meaning "displaced child". Although first reported from Africa, kwashiorkor is now known throughout the world, but mainly in the tropics and subtropics. It is considered to be related to marasmus. D009994 Osmolar Concentration The concentration of osmotically active particles in solution expressed in terms of osmoles of solute per liter of solution. Osmolality is expressed in terms of osmoles of solute per kilogram of solvent. D011188 Potassium An element in the alkali group of metals with an atomic symbol K, atomic number 19, and atomic weight 39.10. It is the chief cation in the intracellular fluid of muscle and other cells. Potassium ion is a strong electrolyte that plays a significant role in the regulation of fluid volume and maintenance of the WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.
D011502 Protein-Energy Malnutrition The lack of sufficient energy or protein to meet the body's metabolic demands, as a result of either an inadequate dietary intake of protein, intake of poor quality dietary protein, increased demands due to disease, or increased nutrient losses. D012083 Renin A highly specific (Leu-Leu) endopeptidase that generates ANGIOTENSIN I from its precursor ANGIOTENSINOGEN, leading to a cascade of reactions which elevate BLOOD PRESSURE and increase sodium retention by the kidney in the RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEM. The enzyme was formerly listed as EC 3.4.99.19. D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
D003289 Convalescence The period of recovery following an illness. Convalescences
D006760 Hospitalization The confinement of a patient in a hospital. Hospitalizations
