Variations in cryoprecipitate production. 1977

G Rock, and P Tittley

Several variables influencing the recovery of Factor VIII in the cold-precipitated protein fraction were examined. The actual rate at which the physical-chemical conversion of plasma from a solid to a liquid state occurs does not seem to affect the yield. Rather, it is the amount of time immediately postthaw and prior to centrifugation that determines the Factor VIII activity in the cryoprecipitate. With prolonged periods at 4 C the Factor VIII activity leaves the cold precipitate and lifts into the supernatant. Even distribution of the plasma layer and close attention to the thawing procedure facilitate Factor VIII recovery.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011232 Chemical Precipitation The formation of a solid in a solution as a result of a chemical reaction or the aggregation of soluble substances into complexes large enough to fall out of solution. Precipitation, Chemical
D004586 Electrophoresis An electrochemical process in which macromolecules or colloidal particles with a net electric charge migrate in a solution under the influence of an electric current. Electrophoreses
D005169 Factor VIII Factor VIII of blood coagulation. Antihemophilic factor that is part of the factor VIII/von Willebrand factor complex. Factor VIII is produced in the liver and acts in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. It serves as a cofactor in factor X activation and this action is markedly enhanced by small amounts of thrombin.
