Effect of methallibure (ICI compound, 33, 828) on ovarian activity in the catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch). 1977

R B Raizada, and T P Singh

The effect of methallibure on ovary of H. fossilis was studied. Intraperitoneal administration of methalibure (100 microgram/g body weight) once a week for 4 weeks was very effective in suppressing the gametogenic and endocrine activities of ovary. The regressed condition of ovary was also apparent in GSI (2.84 to 1.09) readings. This decreased state of activity was further confirmed by reduced ovarian 32P uptake (28.00 to 18.10). The results obtained after the administration of the above compound on ovary were similar to those of surgical hypophysectomy.

D007016 Hypophysectomy Surgical removal or destruction of the hypophysis, or pituitary gland. (Dorland, 28th ed) Hypophysectomies
D008693 Methallibure A dithiobiurea compound with anti-gonadotropic activity. Aimax,ICI-33,828,Metallibur,Metallibure,Suisynchron,Turisynchron,ICI 33,828,ICI33,828
D009929 Organ Size The measurement of an organ in volume, mass, or heaviness. Organ Volume,Organ Weight,Size, Organ,Weight, Organ
D010053 Ovary The reproductive organ (GONADS) in female animals. In vertebrates, the ovary contains two functional parts: the OVARIAN FOLLICLE for the production of female germ cells (OOGENESIS); and the endocrine cells (GRANULOSA CELLS; THECA CELLS; and LUTEAL CELLS) for the production of ESTROGENS and PROGESTERONE. Ovaries
D005260 Female Females
D005399 Fishes A group of cold-blooded, aquatic vertebrates having gills, fins, a cartilaginous or bony endoskeleton, and elongated bodies covered with scales.
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D013890 Thiourea A photographic fixative used also in the manufacture of resins. According to the Fourth Annual Report on Carcinogens (NTP 85-002, 1985), this substance may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen (Merck Index, 9th ed). Many of its derivatives are ANTITHYROID AGENTS and/or FREE RADICAL SCAVENGERS.
