The use of tetrazolium to determine hydronephrotic damage in human kidneys. 1976

J B Nanninga, and V J O'Connor

A study detailing an assay for evaluating hydronephrotic damage is presented. We used nitroblue tetrazolium, which is reduced by intact renal tissue. When marked hydronephrotic damage has occurred little evidence of tetrazolium reducing activity is present. The clinical application has been helpful in determining the extent of damage and the subsequent need for removal of the kidney in question. When the test indicated functioning renal tissue a repair of the obstruction was performed with subsequent improvement in function.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys
D007677 Kidney Function Tests Laboratory tests used to evaluate how well the kidneys are working through examination of blood and urine. Function Test, Kidney,Function Tests, Kidney,Kidney Function Test,Test, Kidney Function,Tests, Kidney Function
D009580 Nitroblue Tetrazolium Colorless to yellow dye that is reducible to blue or black formazan crystals by certain cells; formerly used to distinguish between nonbacterial and bacterial diseases, the latter causing neutrophils to reduce the dye; used to confirm diagnosis of chronic granulomatous disease. D010084 Oxidation-Reduction A chemical reaction in which an electron is transferred from one molecule to another. The electron-donating molecule is the reducing agent or reductant; the electron-accepting molecule is the oxidizing agent or oxidant. Reducing and oxidizing agents function as conjugate reductant-oxidant pairs or redox pairs (Lehninger, Principles of Biochemistry, 1982, p471). Redox,Oxidation Reduction
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D006869 Hydronephrosis Abnormal enlargement or swelling of a KIDNEY due to dilation of the KIDNEY CALICES and the KIDNEY PELVIS. It is often associated with obstruction of the URETER or chronic kidney diseases that prevents normal drainage of urine into the URINARY BLADDER. Hydronephroses
D001706 Biopsy Removal and pathologic examination of specimens from the living body. Biopsies
D013778 Tetrazolium Salts Quaternary salts derived from tetrazoles. They are used in tests to distinguish between reducing sugars and simple aldehydes, for detection of dehydrogenase in tissues, cells, and bacteria, for determination of corticosteroids, and in color photography. (From Mall's Dictionary of Chemistry, 5th ed, p455) Tetrazolium Salt,Salt, Tetrazolium,Salts, Tetrazolium
D014517 Ureteral Obstruction Blockage in any part of the URETER causing obstruction of urine flow from the kidney to the URINARY BLADDER. The obstruction may be congenital, acquired, unilateral, bilateral, complete, partial, acute, or chronic. Depending on the degree and duration of the obstruction, clinical features vary greatly such as HYDRONEPHROSIS and obstructive nephropathy.
