Merocyanine 540 recognizes membrane abnormalities of erythrocytes in chronic myelogenous leukemia. 1985

J A Reed, and R H Kough, and P L Williamson, and R A Schlegel

Merocyanine 540 is a fluorescent dye which stains erythrocytes that have lost their normal membrane phospholipid asymmetry. Because erythrocytes from patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia have been reported to display this abnormal phenotype, peripheral blood erythrocytes from such patients were examined for their ability to stain with the dye. Erythrocytes from all patients with active disease states stained, whereas neither erythrocytes from normal, healthy individuals nor from a patient whose disease symptoms were eliminated by chemotherapy stained. These results suggest that merocyanine 540 may have utility in the clinical evaluation of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007951 Leukemia, Myeloid Form of leukemia characterized by an uncontrolled proliferation of the myeloid lineage and their precursors (MYELOID PROGENITOR CELLS) in the bone marrow and other sites. D008563 Membrane Lipids Lipids, predominantly phospholipids, cholesterol and small amounts of glycolipids found in membranes including cellular and intracellular membranes. These lipids may be arranged in bilayers in the membranes with integral proteins between the layers and peripheral proteins attached to the outside. Membrane lipids are required for active transport, several enzymatic activities and membrane formation. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010743 Phospholipids Lipids containing one or more phosphate groups, particularly those derived from either glycerol (phosphoglycerides see GLYCEROPHOSPHOLIPIDS) or sphingosine (SPHINGOLIPIDS). They are polar lipids that are of great importance for the structure and function of cell membranes and are the most abundant of membrane lipids, although not stored in large amounts in the system. Phosphatides,Phospholipid
D011744 Pyrimidinones Heterocyclic compounds known as 2-pyrimidones (or 2-hydroxypyrimidines) and 4-pyrimidones (or 4-hydroxypyrimidines) with the general formula C4H4N2O. Pyrimidinone,Pyrimidone,Pyrimidones
D004910 Erythrocyte Membrane The semi-permeable outer structure of a red blood cell. It is known as a red cell 'ghost' after HEMOLYSIS. D005456 Fluorescent Dyes Chemicals that emit light after excitation by light. The wave length of the emitted light is usually longer than that of the incident light. Fluorochromes are substances that cause fluorescence in other substances, i.e., dyes used to mark or label other compounds with fluorescent tags.
